April Books 20) Doctor Who and the Carnival of Monsters
20) Doctor Who and the Carnival of Monsters, by Terrance Dicks

A good Robert Holmes script, turned into an average Terrance Dicks novel. I remember seeing this one in 1981 during the "Five Faces of Doctor Who" repeat season; wonder how well it would stand up to re-watching now?

I watched that recently as part of a Pertwee marathon. It's OK, but a little stark. I'd say it was the least favourite of the box set, but I'm still glad I got the DVD.

I want the Time Monster on dVD. And Invasion of the Dinosaurs.

I also recall watching it during the five face season. I wasn't that impressed, an initially thought I hadn't seen it when originally broadcast. However, like most of my experiences with Pertwee stories there are sudden 'flashback' moments as something on screen triggers a memory from when I was a kid.

In this instance it was the shot of the Drashigs thrashing around. Humiliatingly these were the only Dr Who monsters that ever gave me nightmares. Recurrent ones over a number of years.

*sigh*

Oh well, it could have been worse, it could have been the pink inflatable snake from Kinda.

I saw it quite recently on DVD. It suffers badly from appalling Pertwee-era production values.

It's my favourite Pertwee, and one of my all-time favourite stories. This may have something to do with the fact that it's the second story I ever saw, but I have re-watched it recently and thought it had aged very well. It's a self-contained four-parter with some great characters and dialogue, and I find the Drashigs both scary (mostly) and original.

Opinion, as you see from the other comments, varies. ;-)
