Doctor Who
Well, we now know the answer to the question people have been asking for forty years: in a battle between the Daleks and the Cybermen, who would win? The interaction between the two sets of baddies was great.

Anne in the car on the way home (we were watching at a friend's) spotted certain similiarites with the Philip Pullman trilogy. These are explored further by [info]communicator here and in comments to [info]despotliz here.

Having just listened to (and watched where possible) the Dalek Master Plan, I really did think that Rose was going to go out into the void, like Katarina. Though I was happy enough with her being saved by Pete ex machina.

One of the kids watching with us muttered at 37 past the hour in that we had eight minutes left, and the plot seemed to be over. He actually stuck it out to the end but his two elder brothers fled as soon as (as [info]spaced_oddity put it) Rose's make-up started melting.

Yeah, the very end went on a wee bit - but it's not the worst padding we've seen from Russell T Davies in his own episodes. The only bit that was really silly was cyber-Yvonne weeping (?oil?).

Edited to add: Anne asks, what about the Cybermen who were Cyber-ised on our Earth - surely they were unaffected by passage through the Void, and therefore shouldn't have been sucked in? But maybe the materials for Cyber-ising them were brought across?

In summary: Very good stuff, and very nearly great.

We all enjoyed it despite the little flaws.

I agree about the long asked question. It is exactly the type of thing we would have discussed in the playground at school and at once would have formed two gangs, one of Cybermen and the other Daleks, to decide the issue once and for all. (Usually ended up in a real war as no-one would agree to die when shot.)

The cyber materials were indeed brought across the void.
But - the sensible question asked on my LJ was why wasn't the tardis sucked into the void? Special tardis glue?

I'm just glad the Daleks aren't gona forever, Mr. Davis seems to write in excuses for at least one Dalek staying alive. Like the black Dalek activating a temporal shift or something similar, but he was clearly not sucked into the void.

Hopefully now that means if the Daleks are in a future episode it will include them trying to find Davros to rebuild the Dalek race.

I just loved the image of a Dalek with a sense of humour - "Cybermen are superior in only one way, they die easier"
I could see the line coming, but it still cracked me up

It was a good line. Dalek humor, alas.

There was never any competition between the Daleks and the Cybermen, in my opinion. This is probably because I'm rather fond of the Daleks, but really, Cybermen are just glorified human beings, Daleks destroyed the entire race of Time Lords.
Also, I like the ending, as girly as that may be, but I thought they deserved closure. Though the bride pissed me off, she ruined my moment.

Oh, good, I wasn't the only one who felt that way. (I just watched it on DVD. So behind the times!)

Bear in mind this is not quite a true Dalek-Cybermen war. These Cybermen are not from Mondas, so don't have the same experience of forging a galactic empire. These are newly evolved Cybermen who haven't had the time to build up a technological arsenal that the Cybermen from our universe have. I'd still favour the Daleks in a straight fight, though.

I agree about Cyber-Yvonne. I thought she was a good plot point, but I can't see any precedent for her keeping her own voice, and the bleeding/crying was just silly.

I guess the epilogue was a little stretched out, but I do think it formed an important part of the Doctor/Rose story.

Looking forward to the Christmas episode.

I was expecting Rose to die a terribly, messy, gory death. In battle.

Having said that, I enjoyed it greatly and nearly cried at the end - until the runaway bride turned up.

Also, I think there's a possible gap for Rose to come back. Bad Wolf Bay anyone?
