A certain conversation
The U.S. Episcopalian church is holding its tri-annual General Convention (presumably equivalent to the CoE Synod). The Rev. Robert Certain reports:

Yesterday I spent an hour with former President and Mrs. Gerald Ford. Mr. Ford voiced a concern that we avoid schism in our deliberations, and he and Betty assured me of their prayers throughout the coming days.
I wasn't aware that they were faced with threats of schism? Is Gerald Ford better informed about this than I am?

The radical right is taking over moderate Protestant churches in the USA at a scary rate these days, so President Ford might well have his ear to the ground on this.

(brain fog this morning, so no cite now-- maybe later)

Like other branches of the Anglican Communion they may face schism over issues with homosexuality?

Scary when Gerald Ford is better informed than you are, isn't it? Yes, there's a schism threat -- the gay bishop thing has got a minority chunk of the Episcopalian population threatening to leave, especially with the worldwide Anglican church encouraging them.

To quote one rather intolerant commentator: "The faithful are stressing the need to avoid hypocrisy... that the election of homosexual bishops perverts the message of Christ and renders impotent the Episcopalian Church's missionary work in Africa, South America, and Asia."

...

Yes, funny how the Episcopalian Church is suffering a PR problem with potential converts that are already under the purview of the worldwide Anglican Church.

Ever since there has been a lot of low-level inter-diocesan schisming and threats of major schisming between the Episcopalians and the Anglicans going on in this country and elsewhere (conservative African bishops threatening to break away from Canterbury if the Archbishop of Canterbury doesn't clamp down on the "heretics" here frex) It's gotten quite serious, even though afaik it's only a tiny splinter that wants to disrupt things (and take control of The Stuff). For an American insiders' overview of it, read the blog Father Jake Stops The World.
