Flags test
Sent around by a colleague. Who can name all these flags? (I could only manage three.) Helpful (or not) hints: only two of them are countries with seats at the UN one appeared as a national flag only this month two are Mediterranean

Comments screened for now - will unscreen when a few people have had a go.

The double-headed eagle 5 from bottom is Serbia.
The one that looks a little like Blue Peter *g* 4th down is St Pierre and Miquelon.
The bottom one is Northern Cyprus.
2nd down is Liberia.
2nd from bottom isn't Iceland, is it? ETA: no, I don't think it is, that's on dark blue IIRC. Ooh, the Faroes?
3rd from bottom, is that Iraq?

Hmm, what have I eliminated? One Med flag to go, and it's not Malta, Sardinia, Sicily, or obvious countries bordering the Med. Hmmm. Top one's obviously a colony/former colony of some kind - somewhere in the Caribbean? 3rd one down must belong to St Pierre or Miquelon or one of its constituent parts. 5th one down ought to be obvious, in a 'colony of' kind of way, and it's annoying me now. 4th from bottom - some former Soviet republic? Belarus?

1. Hawaii
2. Liberia
3. ? Trinidad & Tobago? Mauritius?
4. Channel Islands? Isle of Man?
5. Greek Cyprus? No - definitely not that...hmmm...
6. Looks Imperial Russian ... Belorussia perhaps?
7. Turkmenistan, at a guess - or Maoist Nepal.
8. Syria? ... there are three identical flags with 1-3 stars as I recall.
9. Greenland? No, probably Estonia or Lithuania.
10. Turkish Cyprus.

How did I do?

Ok staring from #1 and leaving spaces when I don't know, I go for

1 Gibraltar (?)
2 Costa Rica (?) (I know their flag is similar to the US one, but not sure)
3 Basque?
4 (Hmmm, I should know that if my last one is right)
5 ?
6 Montenegro
7 Mongolia (?)
8 Syria (?) (or one of the former UAR states. Can't remember which had one star)
9 Iceland
10 Cyprus (Turkish Republic of North)

Now off to Wikipedia! :O)

The second one is Liberia, I'm pretty sure about that. I'm taking a guess that the fourth one is Portugal and the last one is...Turkey??

Eek! Fiendish!

Let's see... God, this is going to be embarrasing.

I'm going to guess that the one with Arabic writing is the Polisario Saharawi flag.

The one with the green diagonal cross and the white and red orthogonal crosses... Serbia? And the one with the small copy of the same next to the big ship, Montenegro?

The one with the crescent, I'm thinking one of the Central Asian Stans. Turkmenistan?

The hammer and sickle one. Nepalese Maoists?

The blue and white stripy one with the crown - Cyprus?

Red blue and white orthoganal crosses, in the Scandinavian sort of pattern - Faroe Islands?

Union Jack in the corner - British Virgin Islands?

Red, blue and white stripes with double-headed eagle. Yeek. Um, official pro-Russian Chechen flag? (My guesses are getting wilder and wilder)

Red and white stripes with white star on blue background - er, FARC?

Well, I'm guessing 0/10 for accuracy, but how much do I get for creativity?

Good God, I got at least one right. (Faeros). But aaaaagh! How could I miss the Basque one? Hmm, so what's the one with the mini Basque flag in the corner? Curiouser and curiouser.

Number 2 I think is Liberia. (Wow, A-level Geography in comes in handy for something shock!!!)

No idea about number 4, though it's a beautiful flag! (I would hasten a guess that it is a colony/former colony/sister nation of number 3?) If I didn't know better, I would say it was one of the channel Islands, but I know it isn't (unless the Minquiers and Ecréhous islands have come up with their own flags now?)

6 has a very eastern-European/Baltic feel to it; makes me thing of places like Roumania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Yugoslavia, Croatia, Montenegro, somewhere in that neck of the woods. Can you tell I don't know it yet? ;)

The last one looks like the negative of the Turkish flag. Have they come up with a flag for the Turkish part of Cyprus?

two are Mediterranean Those wouldn't be Liberia and the Faroes then? The rest have me stumped - pre-googlebrain-check anyway.

That last one is so like the Turkish flag's symbol that I am guessing there has to be a connection but that would be pure guesswork. I thought I knew the first one but then remembered that British Indian Ocean has wavy lines - grrr! Off to play the google game now.

2 looks like Puerto Rico, 3 looks like the Basque flag. I think 5 is San Marino

6 looks like the Russian one, I think, but from what you're saying about one being a new country that could be the Montenegran flag. 8 could be Iran, 9 could be Greenland and 10 looks familiar but I can't place it, possibly Tunisia, going off the crescent and the colours used.

At a guess for 1, I'd say one of the Pacific islands, it could be Hawaii or the British Virgin Isles. 4, if 3 is the Basque country could be for the part of France that's on the border with that part of Spain or the part of Spain that's abutting France. 7 could be Mongolia at a really wild guess, or former USSR republic.

All I can get are Hawaii, Liberia, Serbia and Moldavia. And I cheated on Moldavia, I wiki'd for soviet states and looked at all the flags.
