Back
I'm back. Thanks to those of you who noticed I was gone. I was participating in a one day boycott of livejournal, in protest at their policy on pictures of breastfeeding.

Leaving and returning was surprisingly easy to do. I'd like to say I spent my time more productively without the lure of LJ, but I'd have to lie in the process.

Nick, seriously considered joining you, but int eh end, well, was utterly swamped at work anyway.

However, some of the comments in this thread in Making Light and also this comment on my post on the subject do show things in a slightly differnet light; all the reading around I've done on it points me at the same conclusion as [info]rho; both sides are in the wrong, and the way that Abuse was effectively spammed and overloaded by those with the grievance has alienated a lot of people, Abuse, mostly, does some very good work, especially for a team of volunteers.

6A suck, big time. But in this case, there's more to it, and it's not the right stick to beat them with; it looks like US law may have more to do with it than has been publicly said.

Ah well. Back to the office work...

I have perused the Making Light thread in some depth - see my follow-up post quoting from it.

I am sure they are all hardworking people, but I am also deeply unsympathetic to the argument that if you have a problem with Livejournal, or anything, you should just shut up about it until the wise people in charge sort it out.

Sure, the complainers in this case did not go through "proper channels"; but it was not at all clear what "proper channels" might be, and if livejournal and sixapart were not sensible enough to provide an adequate grievance procedure, they have only themselves to blame.

Now it seems rather as if, judging by this report, LiveJournal management are more concerned about annoying the abuse team than about annoying their customers!

Essentially, what it seems to boil down to is 6A is useless, everything else is a detail.

http://www.daweaver.free-online.co.uk/

Covers 6A stuff effectively; he used to write a lot of political stuff on LJ, including psephology on the fly for elections; now he's pretty much dumped LJ completely, which is a shame.

Anyway, going to take the Anil line, I have other battles to fight. Mr Cameron wants to control the music I listen to now because rap might "promote gun and knife crime". Shoot the messenger.

Except Blogger's down. Ah well.

An interesting read, that, and one I hadn't seen linked to from elsewhere.
