My problem is that I just don't like Pratchett that much, and JK Rowling puts me to sleep.

I loved the film version of 'The Princess Bride'. Unfortunately, I don't feel that way about William Goldman's 'novelisation'. Perhaps I have an odd edition of the book, but the copy I have is an attempt to novelise the film, interspersed with Goldman's non-amusing anecdotes about how his family reacted to him wanting to write a screenplay of the book, and other aspects of writing film screenplays. It just did not work - anytime something remotely interesting was about to happen, you'd get Goldman coming in with something totally unnecessary.

Again, perhaps I have the wrong book, but the version I have is so unbearably awful that I'd seriously advise against reading it and sticking to the film instead...

No, that's the book. It also, IIRC, predates the movie. The interjections are in the movie to an extent as well, when Falk interrupts the narrative to reassure the kid, etc.

Actually, the way you describe it isn't the book, but it is full of Goldman's commentary on the supposed Morgenstern original. Don't recall him talking that much about the screenplay process, but it's 6 months since I read it.

I decided not to take any of the quizzes, because I felt the options were too limited. For one thing they didn't have a "haven't read, and don't intend to" button. Or a "confused the living willies out of me" button, for that matter...

I'm glad to see that except for a couple, all the books on the SF/F list are ones I have read, or intend to, at least...
