Bits and pieces
Best Doctor Who post evar. I had to read it twice before I completely got it, and it obviously sailed over the heads of a lot of the commenters.

For the three of you who care and haven't seen it: Match It for Pratchett. (Concept from [info]fastfwd, catchy slogan from [info]akicif.)

[info]vasco_pyjama's sartorial dilemma.

[info]elmyra has some interesting reflections on the latest LiveJournal kerfuffle. Likewise [info]white_hart. (Do you two know each other, by the way?)

If any of you know or are interested in Jonathan Fryer, likely to be Lib Dem MEP for London from summer of next year, I've syndicated his blog to [info]jonathanfryer.

My boss on Samantha Power on Sergio Vieira de Mello (and even if you don't recognise either of those names or know who I work for I think you'll find it an interesting read).

Speaking of Samantha Power, I feel very sympathetic to her recent travails; I once had a narrow escape myself in that regard (fortunately the person who I described as "infuriating friends, colleagues and allies" thought it was funny rather than offensive).

I got as far as point no. 2 then thought 'Cybernaut? Why are they mentioning Cybernauts? Surely everyone knows about Cyber... aaah!'

That Doctor Who post is fabulous.

My take on the whole LJ thing: make commenter-only free, ad-free accounts. That would put it much more in line with other blogging sites, where you can register to post comments but that doesn't mean you get set up with an actual blog. It also neatly addresses the concerns of people who no longer feel comfortable saying "You can get an account just to comment and read my locked posts, it's free!". And if you want to actually blog, pony up one way or another.

That would be an open ID account, then? I have a couple of people on my f-list who have those.

Can you add open-ids to your friends list? Because otherwise it only helps with commenting on unlocked posts.

Yes, you can add them to your f-list, and even your pervy sex filters if you like ;)

Can you give them access to friends-locked posts?

...Ah, I see you already answered that. *) Nifty, thanks!

That Doctor Who post was fantastic, but I did suspect something on point 2 (Cybernaut? They were in The Avengers... Ah, right) and confirmed by mention of Susan in point 4.

The indignant responses from people who really didn't get it it (especially "you haven't been here long, have you?") were priceless.

The Who post is brilliant.

Did you hear the rumour that the Doctor was going to be recast as a babbling hyperactive with weird dark hair?

That Doctor Who post is brilliant. What makes it especially brilliant is the number of people who just didn't spot it! That made my day...

My favourite comment is "THIS POST IS THE BEST THING TO HAVE HAPPENED IN THE HISTORY OF EVER. / +50,000 Intertube points will be wired to your account". That specific comment thread goes on to describe another comm as a "festival of fail", which I may find myself using.
